Edinburgh derby talking points: Aaron Hickey shines, Paul Heckingbottom under pressure

By Aaron Hickey’s impressive display to the Hibernian fans calling for Paul Heckingbottom’s departure, here are the greatest talking points from the Edinburgh derby…
Aaron Hickey shines in derby debut
What a way for the 17-year-old to mark his Edinburgh derby debut. There was still an element of fortune about his first goal since it took a deflection from the outstretched leg of Josh Vela , but the child was good value because of his winner. He awakened to the frantic nature of the second half in just his 12th appearance to the Tynecastle side, was eager to go ahead and supply an outlet refused to hide when his team went behind and defended resolutely.
Newspaper reports indicate Manchester City have been tracking his evolution – would he add to the growing record of left-backs that are remarkable of Scotland? He’s got every opportunity according to this showing.
Heckingbottom faces questions
Hibs have won since April 6 – per triumph over Hearts at Tynecastle – which is surprising given Paul Heckingbottom’s predominate in Leith started. Hibs went 10 games without even losing to finish in the top six months after his appointment in February.
There were protests out Easter Road following the match on Sunday as Heckingbottom’s side slumped to 11th in the Premiership table.
The derby nearly felt as a make-or-break fixture for Heckingbottom and counterpart Craig Levein given how sides had started the season. Levein has got at least some temporary respite but will Hibernian stand by their man?
Hibs were weak in the first half here, moving long into Hearts centre-backs on events, yielding achievement, and they failed to benefit from the momentum following the fantastic opener following the period of Stevie Mallan. The essence of in front of their own fans, this defeat, leaves Heckingbottom confronting questions .
Derby test is passed by levein
Last week hearts lovers protested out Tynecastle from Levein in their amounts however, the Hearts boss played a blinder in the derby.
Beginning at the back with three stunted the home side, with Christophe Berra and Craig Halkett mopping up long balls on the top, however Levein was quick to act when his negative did move behind. Andy Irving and Callum Morrison were introduced as Hearts became aggressive going forward through Ryotaro Meshino’s trickery along with the ability of Uche Ikpeazu and pushed farther up the pitch.
Levein turned the match into an end slugfest for this aggression after the opener, with Hearts enjoying a sustained period of stress as they took the game. Could not stand up for this.
Where was Scott Allan?
Scott Allan, A real match-winner appeared just like Hibs’ danger going ahead when the trunk was broken from by the hosts but these minutes were shown to be more meticulous than the home fans would have enjoyed.
There is an argument among the Easter Road faithful that Heckingbottom is not getting the best out of both Allan and it could be stated that was here. Indeed, fans reacted angrily following the Hibs boss substituted Allan in a current draw with his side conceding a late equaliser, with St Johnstone.
Allan was not necessarily awful from Hearts, he seemed unsafe, if he had been on the ball, he was not in the game enough to be the decisive effect he can be and this is an issue Hibs need to solve going forward.
Hibs’ recruiting issues?
Paul Heckingbottom brought in 10 new players on the summer as he seemed to place his stamp on the Hibs squad but the huge majority have suffered frustrating starts to their careers in Leith.
Christian Doidge was on the bench at Easter Road on Sunday and has started only two league games up to now, despite arriving from Forest Green in the summertime for a considerable charge. Transfers from Tom James, Adam Jackson and England Joe Newell were substitutes while fellow summertime recruits Melker Hallberg and Josh Vela failed to earn a genuine impact.
Chris Maxwell was a surprise inclusion in goal for his first Premiership start, Jason Naismith made his derby introduction whilst Heckingbottom could have introduced Rangers loanee Glenn Middleton before given his display in the final stages.
Before the game Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd questioned these summer signings.
“The recruiting over the summer was very, very disappointing. That’s where I feel a lot of Hibs fans are requesting the question of Paul Heckingbottom. When you bring players they have to be better than that which is already there and that has not been the case when you find the beginning line-up now.
“The vast majority of those signings are on the bench and especially when you spend the money you spend on a striker [Doidge] that cannot make the starting line-up again, which can be unsatisfactory from the Hibs standpoint when they’re spending money.”
A springboard for Hearts?
Defeat at Easter Road would have been devastating for Hearts and possibly for Levein’s tenure as boss contributed not only their bad start to this season but also their disappointing end to the previous effort, using a Scottish Cup final look masking frustrating form in the league.
Victory over Hibernian moved Hearts off the bottom of the league, as much as eighth, and they have a chance to reserve a League Cup semi-final spot at Hampden whenever they could beat Aberdeen in Tynecastle on Wednesday before they have the chance to follow that up with a different positive outcome in St Mirren next weekend.
They have an opportunity to build on this, although after the game Levein confessed that Hearts and he had a very long way to go after picking up their first win of the campaign. Benefits in the next week could place a spin on their beginning.
